The Breakdown: Dos Santos vs Mir

0

Set to take place Saturday night May 26th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas is an epic card of heavyweight action. Headlining the event is the Champion Junior Dos Santos defending his belt for the first time against Mir. This is my breakdown for the main event fight.

Frank Mir - Most decorated UFC Heavyweight still fighting, BJJ Blackbelt and powerful striker.

Frank Mir has nearly 11 years of service for the UFC competing since 2001 and has been the champion twice previously. Mir's style is Balanced, he has a very well rounded skill set both on the standing up and on the mat. Mir is constantly improving his stand up game and has proven he has Knock Out Power. However Mir is most skilled on the ground where he is a BJJ Blackbelt and has a tendency for leaving his opponents with broken limbs if he gets a hold of a submission, 9 of Mirs 16 career wins come by way of tap out.

Side Notes - Mir is the first guy to ever Knock Out and Submit MMA Legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mir holds the record for most submissions attempted of all heavyweights.

Junior Dos Santos - Boxing Specialist, BJJ Brown Belt, powerful puncher.

Junior Dos Santos is a boxing specialist with Knock Out power in either hand that could end the fight at any second. He has arguably the best boxing in the UFC Heavyweight Division and is what got him to become the Heavyweight Champion of the world. Dos Santos is also a Brown Belt under the Nogueira family but up to this point we haven't really seen his ground game. Dos Santos has great take down defense stuffing 85% of opponents attempts, which allows him to keep the fight up we're he is better then everyone up to this point.

Side Notes - Undefeated in the UFC 8-0, KO Victories in 5 of his 8 UFC Fights, only taken down 1 time in the UFC.

Mir has the advantage in Jui-Jitsu and size

Even though we haven't seen JDS grapple, I do believe that Mir has the advantage. Mir defeated Dos Santos coach, mentor and idol by submission and is the only guy on earth to do it in an MMA fight so he automatically gets the advantage on the mat in my opinion. Mir also outweighs Dos Santos by a good 10-20lbs which he could use if he can get in top position.

JDS has the Stand Up advantage

JDS has been looking unstoppable, he has destroyed all of his opponents in his UFC career so far with his boxing pedigree. Saturday Night Dos Santos goes against an opponent with all of his career losses coming by way of knock out which happens to be JDS's specialty. Dos Santos has knocked out 5 of 8 and has badly beaten the opponents he didn't knock out. As stated above Dos Santos also does not get taken down very often at all, he stuffs 85% of opponents take downs and knows how to keep the fight standing where he is more likely to win.

Final Thoughts and Prediction

In what will be Dos Santos' very first title defense, Junior will look to avenge the loss of his mentor and friend Big Nog. Junior's advantage on the feet will likely be what decides the outcome of this fight. With only 1 opponent ever being successful at taking JDS down once to the mat, Frank Mir is going to have his work cutout for him getting the fight to the mat where he would be in charge. If we take a look at Frank's history he only losses if his opponent can knock him out, not saying that Mir has a glass chin I'm saying that if your going to win against Frank Mir you gotta knock him out, which is exactly what Dos Santos is good at doing. The odds are stacked highly against Mir to win this fight if it stays standing, I believe Mir needs to get the fight to the ground any way possible, he needs to clinch up with Dos Santos and either sneak in a trip or desperately pull guard. Even though I'm a strong believer that Frank Mir's chances of winning greatly go up if the fight goes to the mat I am going with JDS in this one. Dos Santos reign is here and I don't see Mir being the guy to dethrone him. I'm calling it for Dos Santos by TKO

3 must watch fights on the UFC 146 Prelims

0

Its not all about the Main Card, the UFC 146 Prelim card is stacked from beginning to end, though the whole entire UFC 146 card is stacked full of potential amazing fights, I want to point out 3 of them that probably wont get that much attention but are definitely must watch!

Edson Barbosa vs Jamie Varner
Why? Because Edson Barbosa is one of the hottest prospects in the UFC. He's currently undefeated with a record of 10-0 which includes 4 UFC wins and Fight of the Night honors in his last 3. He's riding the momentum of one of the most spectacular spinning wheel head kicks ever landed in an MMA Fight that earned him KO of the Night against Terry Etim. The UFC Lightweight up and comer battles Jamie Varner a veteran of MMA with wins against Drew Fickett and Donald Cerrone. Barbosa is looking to take the leap from prospect to contender and that is why you should not miss this fight.

Jason Miller vs CB Dollaway
Ok maybe its cause I'm a big Mayhem fan but still this fight is must watch! Ok maybe its only a must watch if your a Mayhem fan or a Mayhem hater. Unfortunately Miller is coming off a very poor performance against Michael Bisping, so this is Millers 2nd chance to prove what he's made of. He is known more for his actions outside of the cage and his entrances then his fights but Miller has established him self as one of the divisions best grapplers in side the cage. Miller has been in the ring with the best competition the division has to offer now and then from GSP, Jake Shields, Jacare, Kazushi Sakuraba, Robbie Lawler, just to name a few. Luckily for us Mayhem fans he didn't get cut after his poor performance against Michael Bisping but he has to make a statement and get a win in his next fight against C.B Dollaway. So for Mayhem fans and haters this is a must watch.

Dan Hardy vs Duane Ludwig
This is do or die for the UFC fan Favorite Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy. He faces Duane Bang Ludwig at UFC 146, Bang Ludwig holds the record for the fastest KO in UFC History and possesses some of the best Muay Thai in the division. Hardy dropped his last 4 in a row after his title shot with GSP but to his credit they have all been top level fighters, GSP, Carlos Condit, Anthony Johnson and Chris Lytle which may be part of the reason the UFC didn't drop him. Dan Hardy also goes for broke when he fights he likes to stand and bang with his opponents which I'm sure Duane Ludwig will gladly welcome. This fight should be a great stand up war a definitely must watch.

Those are my 3 must watch fights based on my preferences as a fan but I also feel like these fights deserve a mention.

Glover Teixiera vs Kyle Kingsbury
Glover is a highly touted Light Heavyweight Prospect out of Brazil it'll be interested to see how he does in the UFC.

Paul Sass vs Jacob Volkmann
Paul Sass is a submission machine 11 submission wins 9 by triangle choke. Jacob Volkmann is no slouch him self 5 fight UFC win streak.

Diego Brandao vs Daren Elkins
A lot of people are speculating that Brandao will be a future Featherweight champ, he sure has looked impressive thus far. Daren Elkins is a solid test for the hot prospect.

I'd love to know which fights are your must watch for the UFC 146 Prelims let me know on the comments or on twitter @Fightjabber

Strikeforce:Barnett vs Cormier Reaction

0

Strikeforce was able to put together an awesome card full of great fights. I happened to miss Burrell vs Spang but the other 3 fights were amazing. Since I'm only reacting to 3 fights I'll go ahead and cover all of them.

Feijao wastes no time in putting away Kyle
The first time these two guys fought Feijao ended up gassing and Kyle was able to get the KO. This time Feijao went in there to finish Kyle as quickly as possible. Feijao showed amazing killer instinct after he hurt Kyle with a clean knee and never let up finishing with a Guillotine choke. It wasn't exactly clear if the winner of this fight would fight for the Vacant Strikeforce LHW Championship but with literally only 1 more contender Gegard Mousasi in the division it looks like it is going to be Feijao vs Gegard Mousasi for the vacant Strikeforce LHW Championship.

Josh Thompson vs Gilbert Melendez fight to a split decision
This fight was one of the better Rubber Match fights I've ever seen. The trilogy kind of started slow but picked up a bit in the 2nd and then had entertaining back and forth action the rest of the way. The first round was the closest round of the entire fight since both guys were mainly in the feeling out process. I think Melendez won the 2nd and 3rd and Thompson won the 4rth and 5th. The rounds that Thompson won we're no doubt more dominant with Thompson nearly finishing Melendez with a rear naked choke in the 4rth and landing better combinations in the 5th finishing the fight on top position. After the last round I was pretty sure we just saw Melendez being Dethroned from the Strikeforce lightweight championship but the judges scored it for him via split decision. I dont think Thompson got robbed in this fight but I did lean more towards The Punk. I"ll have to watch the fight again but I do believe whoever did more in the first round won the fight since they split the next 4 rounds.

Complete Domination by Daniel Cormier
I personally thought Barnett's experience would win him this fight. Daniel Cormier displayed composure way beyond his experience level and controlled the fight the entire time. In an interview I was watching before the fight Cormier had said that he is going to try and control the fight. If he wants the fight to stay standing it'll be because he wants it to, if he wants the fight on the mat it'll be because he wants it there. That's exactly what he did, to do that against possibly the 3-5 ranked heavyweight in the entire world was impressive. Cormier got the better of Josh Barnett in the stand up department, with takedowns throwing and slamming Barnett around like it was easy, and busting up Barnett with GND on the mat. Cormier called it his graduation night in the prefight promo and that's exactly what it was. Barnett was his first true test and he passed it with flying colors. Many are speculating that Cormier will end up in the UFC with possible match ups with all of the best Heavyweights in the world and I think he's going to fair up well against them. After last night we need to add another Heavyweight to the contender's list.

Dana White reveals Renan Barao as Urijah Fabers opponenet

0

After Faber's original opponent Bantamweight Champion Dominic Cruz went down with a blown ACL a few weeks ago we finally know for sure who will be fighting Urijah Faber at UFC 148. Originally Faber vs Cruz was going to be for the Bantamweight championship however with Cruz's injury, Dana White announced last night on TUF Live that Urijah Faber's next opponent will be Renan Barao for the interim Bantamweight Championship.

Most definitely the most deserving Barao is most recently coming off a decisive win against Scott Jorgenson at UFC 143. Barao's first lost also happens to be his very first professional MMA fight since then going unbeaten in 28 fights dating all the way back to 2005.

The event is headlined by Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen II July 7th at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. For continued updates stay tuned to Fightjabber and follow us on twitter @Fightjabber

Chad Mendes vs Cody McKenzie added to UFC 148

0

An interesting match has been added to UFC 148, Featherweight top contender Chad Mendes is now slated to welcome Cody McKenzie to the division. The Event will take place July 7, headlined by Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Mendes (12-1 MMA) only blemish as a professional comes when he recently challenged Aldo for the Featherweight strap at UFC 142 which marked his first professional loss.

McKenzie 2-2 as a 155er enters the Featherweight division with everything to gain and nothing to lose. After possibly saving his job by defeating Marcus Levessuer at UFC on Fuel 3. A win over a top 5 featherweight sky rockets him into title contention.

UFC on Fuel 3 Prediction Results

0

The first event I recorded my predictions went well. UFC on Fuel TV 3 wasn't one of those cards were it was easy to spot the guys who clearly had a high probablity of winning. This card was difficult, I really did my research when choosing my winners and I think it worked out well. Check out the results below

My total overall picks went 5-1 that's .833 considering I could of easily gone 3-3 getting the picks from Igor Pokrajac and Amir Sadollahs narrow decision victories.

I didn't have the same success at picking the outcome going 0-6  no thanks to Jeff Hougland who refused to be TKOed whoever the overall goal of this is to see how well I fair at picking winners. My love for the sport mixed with the knowledge that I've picked up over the years has left me wondering if I could be successful at MMA betting along with providing quality picks to whomever wishes to follow this blog.

I will be making a Predictions page that will be linked in the main menu so you can keep tabs on my prediction record and view past events that I did predictions for on the page as well.

Lavar Johnson replaces Mark Hunt at UFC 146

0
UFC 146 is schuffling and mixing the card up yet again. This time UFC Heavyweight Mark Hunt suffered a Knee injury and was forced to withdraw from his bout with Stefan Skyscraper Struve at UFC 146. His replacement? Heavyweight up and coming powerhouse and former Strikeforce fighter Lavar Johnson. Johnson most recently destroyed Pat HD Barry only a few weeks ago at UFC on Fox 3 and is riding a momentum wave winning his first 2 UFC Fights back to back in devastating fashion.

Struve is on a winning streak of his own after winning back to back against both Pat Barry and Dave Herman. The 7 foot heavyweight will likely look to use his own momentum to defeat Johnson and keep climbing his way back up the division ladder.

BJ Penn not ready to come out of retirment just yet

0
After turning down a superfight with Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez, the UFC offered the former Lightweight champion another huge fight. This time it will be fellow UFC Vet and long time Welterweight contender Josh Koshcheck. Koshcheck promptly accepted the fight as he took to twitter Thursdays afternoon.

Koscheck wrote
"#UFC just offered me to fight BJ Penn...I said YES!!!!! Just waiting on him!!!!!! Let's scrap bra?"

The possibility of seeing The Prodigy back in the Octagon was then put to bed with BJ Penn responding

"@joshkoscheck I know it costs a lot of money to live that lavish lifestyle, big house, fast cars & you need big fights but sorry I’m not coming back anytime soon! "

While BJ is enjoying his retirement we the fans can only hope that Dana White and the UFC are able to offer BJ a fight he cannot refuse.

Donald Cerrone back on track defeats Jeremy Stephens

0
Donald Cerrone got back to his winning ways Tuesday night in Fairfax defeating Jeremy Stephens seemingly without any trouble. The skilled kick boxer was able to mix up his attack with Strikes, Kicks to the legs, body and head, elbows, knees, and take downs keeping Stephens confused and out of range of his powerful punches. Cerrone played a calm and methodical game that picked Jeremy Stephens apart from the beginning of the 1st round all the way to the last bell making a big statement that he is still in the heap of the ultra crowded Lightweight division. Now bouncing back from his loss with Nate Diaz, Cerrone said in his post fight interview he is ready to get back in the cage as soon as possible suggesting a possible spot on the UFC card in Denver. Cerrone's home town. With a dominating win over a game opponent like Jeremy Stephens it will be interesting to see who gets matched up with Cerrone next. There is an abundance of options and with the stacked division who ever it is will surely be an awesome fight to watch.

Cesar Gracies Official Response to Nick Diaz No Show

My decision to write an account of what happened this weekend is not to answer to the detractors of myself or my team, as no explanation is owed them. It is instead based on my acknowledgement and respect to our fans and supporters. I never thought I would be answering for something that happened at a grappling tournament, however with the worldwide popularity of the sport and my team increasing, I understand that our supporters need answers.

Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller The breakdown

0
Headlining UFC on Fox 3 Nate Diaz and Jim Miller will go to battle for what may very well be a number 1 contender spot. Here goes my breakdown of the fight.

Jim Miller - High school and Collegiate Wrestler, BJJ Black Belt
Jim Miller's style is a hard grinding pace, his stand up is dangerous enough to hurt you and his wrestling base mixed with his Black Belt level BJJ makes him a serious threat if the fight hits the mat. Jim Miller has very good take downs when he gets the fight down he's not going to out wrestle his opponents he's going to try to improve his position and always looks for something he can submit his opponent with. This style got him to the top of the division and makes him a pretty exciting fighter.

Jim Miller - Side Notes
Jim Miller averages over 3 submission attempts per 15 min fight (
fight metric) and holds 12 submission wins. Jim Miller has never been knocked out or submitted.

Nate Diaz - BJJ Blackbelt, High Level Boxer
Nate Diaz's preferred style is sprawl and brawl, but he's not afraid to fight off his back and use his black belt level BJJ skills. Nate has some of the best boxing in the division, he doesn't necessarily have knock out power but he can hurt his opponents by landing a lot of quick punches that add up over the coarse of the fight. Nate recently got his Black belt in BJJ under Cesar Gracie and will use his skills when he needs to, he has a really good guard and isn't afraid to attack with submissions. Dominating wins over Takanori Gomi and Donald Cerrone landed Nate Diaz in this potential number 1 contender fight.

Nate Diaz- Side Notes
Nate recently was promoted to black belt under Cesar Gracie, Nate has never been submitted in the UFC, Nate has never been knocked out in his career. Nate holds 10 submission wins.

Nate Holds the standup advantage
Nate is looking like a beast in the stand up game lately since coming back to lightweight, he out strikes nearly all of the opponents that he holds wins against in both significant strikes and total strikes and lands nearly 43% of his strikes according to fight metric. Nate also has about a 5 inch reach advantage that can keep Miller at a distance. Nate's boxing also compliments his BJJ game where he can break his opponents down hurt them and then attack with a submission when their hurt.

Miller gets the wrestling advantage
Nate struggles a bit against good wrestlers and Miller is a good wrestler. While Nate struggles with take down defense at times Miller completes 46% of his take downs. This one looks like Miller is going to take the fight down at some point where Miller is very active on submission attempts and he could out work Nate on the ground and work for a submission.

 Final thoughts and Prediction
I believe that Nate Diaz holds the key advantage to this fight which is the stand up game. He's the physically bigger fighter and has almost a half foot reach advantage over Miller and also has been looking unstoppable with his boxing. Diaz also has a hudge momentum boost going into this fight. Big wins over Gomi and Cerrone along with receiving a his Black Belt in BJJ has got to have Diaz feeling confident. I think Diaz would be able to hold off the take downs and submission attempts for the most part of the fight and pick apart Miller how he did Gomi and Cerrone. I definitly dont see either one of these guys getting finished, with both guys being black belts in BJJ it would be awesome to see a grappling war but my prediction is going to be Nate Diaz by Unanimous Decision. Nate's stand up is going to be a little too much for Miller.

Let Me know your thoughts on the comments or twitter @FightJabber and keep checking in before the event in case I do The Breakdown on another fight for UFC on Fox 3.
